City of Glurns
Glurns - the only city in Tyrol with ring-walls, towers, ecc…
In no other place the visitor is able to relive the medieval life as well as he can do it in the small city of Glurns with its 850 inhabitants and the historical circular city walls, defence- and gate towers, narrow arcade lanes and alleys.

The city of Glurns was founded under the souvereign Meinhard II (1271-1295) who aimed at extending his souvereign gouvernment into the upper Vinschgau Valley against the prince-bishops of Chur.

Glurns gained significance as traffic junction, in terms of marketplace and center for the salt trade, but in 1499 the city was destroyed during the bloody events of the battle of Calven - Calvenschlacht. Since the reconstruction of the city between 1500 and 1520 Glurns underwent only slight changes in terms of building structure and size.

A city is celebrating ... The city Glurns celebrates in 2004 its 700 year city jubilee.
