St. Prokulus
Church Naturns and archeological exhibiton in Naturns
The church of St. Proculus was constructed in the first half of the
7th century as a Germanic wooden church, in the 12th century a Romanesque
tower was added to the building. At the end of the 14th century the
church was heightened, the whole interior decorated with Gothic frescoes
(Crucification group, Cycle of Mary, The three Magi, The Last Supper)
as well as the southern outside wall painted (Genesis and the patron
of the church, the St. Proculus shown as bishop benediciting the work
on the fields).
The church became famous because of the pre-Carolingian frescoes discovered
in 1923 dating from the 7th/8th century which are still known as the
oldest in the entire German speaking language area. Angels, saints,
people and animals are shown in a fascinating, simple linear style.
.
The most interesting and famous piece of the church may be the portrayal
of St. Proculus, sitting on a swing during his fleet from Verona,
therefore known as the "Schaukler - swinger" on the Southern
wall.
