The Palazzo Salis as one of the most important buildings in the
Veltlin region is situated in the historic centre of Tirano in proximity
to the Swiss border. The building shows a façade dating from
the late 16th century limited by two towers and Baroque main porch.
The entrance hall leads the visitor into a vaulted hallway which
terminates into a marvellous Italian inner garden, one of the most
important gardens of Lombardy.
Other remarkable aspects of the Palazzo's inside are the staircase,
the reception hall, the so called "Saloncello" and the
impressive historic cellars still used nowadays as wine-cellar.
The extremely powerful family Salis owed a third of the goods of
the whole Veltlin territory; the family's picture-gallery shows
important personalities from the 17th century, representing the
local political power, as it is shown in the long list of high authorities.
The nine halls destined to the museum tour are on the Palazzo's
upper floor which represent the most precious part of the building.
The rooms were recently restored and provide impressive frescoes
on the vaults as well as stuccoworks on chimneys and frames.
The Museum is accessible to people with walking difficulties, specific
equipment for blind visitors is also provided.
The furniture of the Museum consists of the Salis' impressive property
which documents the history of the 17th century.
The Palazzo's archives actually harbour historic and iconographic
documents regarding social and political life in the territories
of the regions of Graubünden and Veltlin. The impressive tour
will soon be enriched by further fixtures of this époque.
