Castel Tarasp |
|
|
Hardly any castle in Switzerland is as mighty as Tarasp Castle.
It was built in the 11th century by the gentlemen of Tarasp, who came
into the Engadin from Lake Como.
In 1239 it passed into the hands of the counts of Tyrol. There were
some conflicts between the counts of Tyrol, the Swiss and the bishops
of Chur for possession of the castle.
In 1803 Tarasp belonged to the Helvetian Republic. Tarasp changed
owners several times until 1900, when the manufacturer Dr. Lingner
from Dresden bought the derelict castle and renovated it. But he died
in 1916 after the renovation. Today the castle belongs to the von
Hessen family. |
